bicycle lace

This series uses a bicycle wheel with the spokes removed as the frame for hand knit lace in cotton yarn. The large motifs comprise an intuitive design, one that is worked directly into the wheel, not attached after. It is recognizable and still remains a wheel, with even the tube and tire tire remaining. But it is summarily stripped of its primary purpose. In this way the utilitarian and delicate combine with a tension between the decorative element and the functional. The installation of the wheels as a group, creates a dramatic effect, similar to a grouping of rose windows, with delicate lace tracery.
