urchins
The urchin series fuses together knitting and painting. Inspired by the scientific illustrations of Ernst Haeckel, these pieces are an extension of my previous work. Silk and linen threads are hand knit within concentric rings of water color. The fine painted lines resemble pencil marks and echo the stitches. Shades of blue and unsaturated gray predominate, the palette underscoring the solitude in the title. An urchin is a spiky invertebrate and an unwanted street kid, exemplifying abrasion with vulnerability.
